Yes. Each program has a clinical externship requirement (unless eligible for exemption). Those with 15-20+ years experience may apply for clinical exemption. Those unable to apply for exemption apply for clinical placement following their online classes, which must be completed within a 30-mile radius of the student’s home or workplace under the supervision of a duly-licensed site supervisor.
Clinicals are generally completed in hospitals under the supervision of a preceptor who is a licensed nurse or medical doctor assigned to work with the student one-on-one to both demonstrate as well as assess the student’s clinical skills. In certain instances, clinicals may also be arranged in assisted living facilities, doctors’ offices, nursing homes, etc–subject to verification of facility accreditations, credentials and other approvals legally required.
